the snake and the cross

(a Viking-age runestone in Edinburgh)

start at the head of the snake

an echo of dark nights

lit only with fire

a frantic nostalgia

creeps in as romanticism

where we long for something

we never actually had

we can’t speak to that past

it can’t speak to us

yet through the runes of DNA

the message is sent

a story told in scandinavian whispers
