ode to the toenail on my left toe, the one next to the big toe

it began in 2021,

the rejection

overnight, you deciding

you wanted to leave.

your blood pink smile drained to dead white

half way down the nail bed. I

couldn’t even look at you

your half-on half-off

anti-love note

already

halfway out the door.

weeks will go by

then I’ll

cut you

down to size

but you’re here now.

I embrace your half-rejection,

you’re still hanging on.
